What is Liberation Psychotherapy?

question:

How does Liberation Psychology influence your practice?

Rebecca Bruno:

The way that I approach liberation psychology is through the lens that we are not isolated individuals.

We live in community, we live in systems, and it's necessary for, from my perspective and the way that I work, for therapy to acknowledge these systems, systems of power, systems of oppression, systems of justice and injustice.

And that we get to look at how these systems are impacting you and how to subvert or how to relate with community in a larger sense.

And rather than pathologizing or blaming your own experience, we get to start seeing your responses as reasonable reactions to unreasonable systems.

Liberation psychotherapy is a sociopolitical approach that centers on justice, peace, testimony, and sustainability by helping people make sense of and respond to the world around them. Liberation psychology challenges the psychological tenet that psychological problems are primarily individual as opposed to a reasonable reaction to their environment.
